Research
My main interest and competence concern the micro-phenomena of argumentation and rhetoric, c.q. the analytic reconstruction and classification of types of argument, and the effects of micro-variation in phrasing. After having completed my PhD on a normative theoretical approach of an argument type typically used in the legal field ( e contrario argumentation), I have broadened my perspective to argumentation in all kinds of domains and to the combination of argumentation theoretical insights with those of classical and modern rhetoric, and pragmatics. I have published on various topics such as implicit premises, Gricean insights and norms of argumentation, fallacies in classical rhetoric, anecdotal arguments, and reductio ad absurdum arguments. Recently, I have become interested in modern uses of the classical eikos argument, in particular in the ways these are formulated, in how to assess them, and in their potential rhetorical force.
