Research
I am an argumentation scholar whose main interest and competence concern the micro-phenomena of argumentation and rhetoric. I am particularly interested in the analytic reconstruction of arguments, their classification and their phrasing. I started my research career long ago with an argumentative study on the analysis and evaluation of the legal e contrario argument. After that, I broadened my perspective to other discourse domains, with a strong focus on the political, and to the combination of argumentation theoretical insights with those of classical and modern rhetoric, and pragmatics. I have published, among other things, on implicit premises, fallacies in classical rhetorical theory, anecdotal arguments, reductio ad absurdum arguments, ad populum arguments, the antique (reverse) eikos argument and its modern versions, and the strategic use of grammatical constructions in argumentation. Recently, I have been collaborating on the argument from ignorance. Together with my Leiden colleagues I have an ongoing project investigating the ways in which people respond to accusations.
Curriculum Vitae
I studied Dutch Language and Literature (cum laude) at the University Amsterdam and also have a propaedeutic degree in Law, obtained at the same university. My PhD research, on legal argumentation, was supervised by prof. dr. Frans van Eemeren and dr. Eveline Feteris; my dissertation was awarded with the Dissertation Award 2004 from the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis. In 2000 I was appointed in Leiden, where I got tenure in 2003. Since 2020 I am an associate professor.
