Professor Arjan Lankester is professor in Pediatrics and Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation. He is also head of the JACIE-accrediated pediatric stem cell transplantation program, chair of the Working Party Inborn Errors of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and chair of the Working Party Inborn Errors of the European Society for Immune Deficiencies (ESID).

Professor Arjan Lankester is professor in Pediatrics and Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation. He is also head of the JACIE-accrediated pediatric stem cell transplantation program, chair of the Working Party Inborn Errors of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and chair of the Working Party Inborn Errors of the European Society for Immune Deficiencies (ESID).

Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation

The chair is linked to the program of pediatric stem cell transplantation and LUMC research line “Transplantation and Immunomodulation (31301)”. The program serves as national referral centre for pediatric patients with congenital and acquired immune-hematological disorders that can be cured with allogeneic stem cell transplantation. The program combines this regenerative medicine modality with translational, innovative and international oriented research with the aim to optimize stem cell transplantation outcome. The program is also active in the development and clinical implementation of stem cell gene therapy for severe combined immune deficiency and hemoglobinopathies. The program is integrated in the NFU approved expertise centres for combined immune deficiencies, graft versus host disease and hemoglobinopathies.

Academic career

Professor Arjan Lankester studied Medicine at the University of Leiden. He performed his PhD project at the University of Amsterdam/Central Laboratory of the Blood Transfusion service of the Dutch Red Cross (currently Sanquin). His PhD thesis was entitled ‘Antigen receptor complexes on normal and malignant human B cells’ (October 12, 1995). Following his traineeship in Pediatrics (LUMC, 2000) and a fellowship in Immunology (LUMC, 2002) he was appointed as clinical staff member in the department of Pediatrics, division of stem cell transplantation. Since 2009 he is head of the pediatric stem cell transplantation program. In 2016 he was appointed as professor in Pediatrics and Stem Cell transplantation. The title of his inaugural lecture was “Back to the future” (September 8, 2017).
