Security and Legitimacy

The members of the Security & Legitimacy cluster are interested in how domestic, transnational, and international actors produce violence and insecurity, but also how they attempt to mitigate the effects of armed conflicts, manage crises effectively and legitimately, and prevent them from escalating.

The cluster brings together staff with an interest in questions of legitimacy and justice of societal and political institutions and processes. They study how levels of legitimacy and perceptions of justice influence the emergence and evolvement of political and social identities, movements, and institutions. In turn, they explore how identities, movements and institutions affect societal disorder (in terms of violent and non-violent conflict, crises, and security).

Cluster members incorporate diverse theoretical and methodological approaches and have a wide geographical reach, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.
