Jesse Doornenbal is a lecturer at the Institute of Political Science and an external PhD candidate at the Institute of Philosophy. His research focuses on exploring the philosophical, social, and existential consequences of what Nietzsche termed ‘the death of God’.

There is no longer a divine order available to hold on to in the midst of our world that is changing at lightning speed. We are thrown back on ourselves, without being able to find within ourselves a center of gravity from which we can organize the world. The world and we ourselves have been turned upside down. Yet this lack of orientation is anything but self-evident. Most of the time we are preoccupied with trying to gain control over things, with our search for new stability, or with reclaiming what has already been lost.

These issues raises a number of questions that are central to Jesse's thinking: What is the nature of our current condition? How are we supposed to live with this groundlessness that we often don’t even notice? How to deal with existential questions that don't seem to have an answer? How are we to organize our political order when there is no longer an unambiguous common principle?
