The State of Open Science at FGGA
Academia in Motion
What is the state of open science at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs? Our faculty offers a unique environment for moving open science practices forward, while keeping a critical eye to their potential excesses.
The faculty encompasses three institutes (Public Administration, Security and Global Affairs, and Leiden University College), each with distinct research and teaching traditions and styles. These traditions and styles range from qualitative case-based inquiry to quantitative modeling and interdisciplinary education. Understanding how scholars and staff across these institutes perceive and practice open science is therefore crucial for identifying shared opportunities and institute-specific challenges.
Open Science Survey
To get a grasp of what Open Science means at FGGA, members of the faculty Academia in Motion advisory group (fAiM) carried out a survey in 2025 among research and teaching staff. The results of the survey are now in and point to exciting ideas about growth areas in open science (especially around citizen science and/or open education), but also some challenges that need to be addressed in a creative and responsible way (for instance, around barriers that still persist when it comes to Open Access publications).
Results
The results of the survey are synthesised in a freely accessible report, and will be discussed in a public presentation session on 19 March 2026 from 12:30 - 13:30 hrs. in room 3.48. All (academic and non-academic) staff is warmly invited to attend the presentation session.
The presentation session will be introduced by dean Koen Caminada, and moderated by fAiM members Cristina del Real and Andrei Poama. Following a brief discussion by Ludo Waltman (CWTS), we will open the floor to constructive and critical questions from those attending. Lunch and refreshments are provided during the event. More information on registration will follow soon.
