Four migration professors doubly appointed in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus network

Four professors specialising in migration will soon be appointed as Leiden-Delft-Erasmus professors: Professor Thea Hilhorst and Professor Peter Scholten (both Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Professor Marlou Schrover and Professor Olaf van Vliet (both Leiden University) will each receive a second appointment at another university in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus context.

All are affiliated to the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity. The four professors will be officially 'double appointed' at the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus lustrum event on 26 October in Rotterdam.

In the LDE Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity, researchers from all three LDE Universities work together on research into the governance aspects of migration and diversity, from a multidisciplinary perspective. Marlou Schrover, for example, is involved in the centre from the Institute of History, Faculty of Humanities in Leiden. She is now appointed at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

Economist Olaf van Vliet, working at Leiden University's Department of Economics at the Faculty of Law as well as the Institute for Public Administration of the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, will also be appointed at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Spinoza Prize winner Thea Hilhorst brings her knowledge of development cooperation from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, and is now also appointed to Leiden University's Faculty of Humanities. Peter Scholten leads the centre from the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and is appointed to the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs at Leiden University.

On the origins of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity, Scholten said: 'We started in 2019 because we saw the need for multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research. In recent years, the centre has hosted an impressive eight professors in history, urban studies, public administration, economics, humanitarian studies and media across all three universities. We are proud of our robust network of affiliated researchers, young postdocs and students within our Governance of Migration and Diversity Masters programme - where the centre originated. We see these double appointments as the next step in our growth.'

Wim van den Doel, dean of Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Universities on the social importance and unique approach of this centre: 'Migration and diversity are very topical issues and pre-eminently topics that should be considered in the unity of different disciplines. Thus, current events also require a contemplative view. What do we learn from past times? But also about what will be important migration flows in the future, how this changes cities, societies and economies and the effectiveness of policy measures is best analysed as a team. I am therefore very pleased with the double appointments of these four professors of the LDE Centre Governance of Migration and Diversity.'
