Elke Krekels receives Publication Award Dutch Society of Clinical Pharmacology

Krekels received both the Thesis Award and the TOP Publication Award for her thesis 'Size does matter: drug glucuronidation in children'. Her research led to a new dosage regimen of morphine for babies and toddlers. Both prizes were awarded during the scientific meeting of the NVKFB on Friday 11 April.

She conducted her research at the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR), under the supervision of Catherijne Knibbe, Professor of Individualized drug treatment. Knibbe set up a major research project into the optimal dosage of drugs in special patient groups such as very young children and obese patients.

Krekels' research was carried out within a partnership under the flag of TI Pharma. Krekels is currently working as a postdoc at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. In the Pharmacometrics group, she is conducting research led by Professors Mats Karlsson and Lena Friberg into new methods for the analysis of clinical studies in the field of schizophrenia.

She will return to the LACDR this summer as an assistant professor in Pharmacology and will continue her work on pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) modelling with professor Piet Hein van der Graaf.
