Application procedure research visits
Applications for a Research Visit at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law – Leiden University, can be submitted by doctoral researchers (at least in the second year of their studies during the proppsed stay), postdocotral researchers, and senior researchers. The research should thematically align with one of the research themes or projects conducted by the academic staf of the Department of Constitutional and prior agreement.
Application procedure
Applicants should send the following documents to StaatsenBestuursrecht@LAW.leidenuniv.nl with the reference “Application Visiting Fellowship”. The following documents should be attached in PDF format:
- Motivation letter (maximum 500 words):
Explain the reasons for conducting a research visit at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Leiden University, specify the preferred starting date and duration of the stay, and include the name(s) of the Department member(s) with whom you would like to discuss your research during your visit. - Description of intended research (maximum 1,000 words):
Provide a research outline and explain its link to one of the Department’s research areas, its connection to the research interests or publications of the Department’s academic staff, or its connection with the research program “The Legitimacy and Effectiveness of Law & Governance in a World of Multilevel Jurisdictions”; - Curriculum Vitae (CV):
Include a list of publications and the names of two references. - Proof of English proficiency:
If English is not your native language and you do not have a publication record in English, include evidence of your English language proficiency.
Applicants are not required to contact or send application materials to a specific member of the Department’s academic staff before applying. However, it is advisable to include the name(s) of the Department member(s) with whom you wish to discuss your research during your stay.
Application Deadlines
There are two application deadlines during the academic year:
- For stays during the first semester (September–January): 1 March
- For stays during the second semester (February–June): 1 September
Decisions on applications will be made within two months of the application deadlines by the Department. The decision will be based on the quality of the application and the availability of workspace during the desired period.
Facilities
Visiting researchers will be part of the Department’s research community, as well as the research program The Legitimacy and Effectiveness of Law & Governance in a World of Multilevel Jurisdictions. They will have access to:
- Department activities, including research meetings and conferences (please note that some meetings are conducted in Dutch and that participation in certain events or conferences may involve additional costs);
- The (digital) library resources of Leiden University;
- A working space, subject to availability (researchers must bring their own laptop);
- Interaction with one or more members of the Department through a limited number of meetings;
- Activities organized for Leiden University PhD candidates (applicable to visiting PhD students).
Expectations
Visiting researchers are expected to:
- Actively engage in the Department’s research activities;
- Deliver at least one presentation on their research findings;
- Be available to give one presentation, upon request from a member of the Department, on a topic related to their jurisdiction;
- Acknowledge Leiden University in any publications resulting from work conducted during their stay.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to collaborate on a joint publication with member(s) of the Department during or after their stay at Leiden University.
PhD students are also encouraged to invite member(s) of the Department to join their PhD assessment committee, where possible within the regulations of their home institution
Important Information
Research visits are self-funded. The Department does not provide financial support or assistance with housing.
