The Expertise Centre Gender-Based Violence investigates the nature, effects, and prevention of street harassment and sexual violence in public spaces.

We map out how victims experience street harassment and their willingness to report it. At the same time, we investigate the motives of perpetrators and the role that criminalisation plays in this. 

Special attention is paid to cultural and sexual minorities and to the way in which racialisation influences the discussion on street harassment. In the debate, blame is often attributed to men of color or those with a migration background. This context makes it more difficult for many victims to share their experiences and can cause tension during interventions and awareness campaigns.

In addition, the research provides specific insights into what works: effective forms of prevention and ways to prevent gender-related violence in public spaces.
