Education
Through our educational activities at Leiden University, the Public Management and Organisation section seeks to share scientific insights and develop actionable competences that enable individuals and collectives working in public organisations to understand and address today’s societal problems.
The Public Management and Organisation section contributes to academic teaching in various Bachelors, Masters and Honours programmes. We also offer education for professionals, frequently in collaboration with our partners in public administration practice.
Thematic line on Organisation and Management in the BSc programme Public Administration
The bachelor programme on Public Administration addresses the governance of societal problems, integrating insights from sociology, law, economics and organisation sciences. Within the programme, the section among others offers a thematic line on organisation and management in a public sector context, consisting of the courses Public Organisations, Public Management, Public Leadership, and the Integrative Research Project.
Specialisation on Public Management and Leadership in the MSc programme Public Administration (MPA)
The Public Management and Leadership specialisation in the MPA programme emphasises how the behaviour of critical actors – politicians, top-level bureaucrats, street-level professionals and citizens - is fundamental to understand and improve public governance. The specialisation integrates public administration with psychology, business management and behavioural sciences to analyse management and leadership in the public sector.
Profiles on Organisation and Management and Public Professionalism and Good Governance in the MSc programme Management van de Publieke Sector (MPS)
The profile on Organisation and Management in the MPS day programme departs from pressing societal and governance issues. The profile addresses these issues from the perspective of public organisations, including their capacity to collaborate effectively, change management, the relationships between citizens and the state, behaviour of public professionals and public leadership. The profile on Public Professionalism and Good Governance addresses contemporary challenges relating to political-administrative relationships, public values and integrity, as well as the development of professionalism and leadership in the civil service.
Course on Governance in the MSc programme Population Health Management
In the two-year Master’s programme Population Health Management, our section offers a course on Governance. This course examines how fragmented organisational infrastructures makes it hard to approach health care in a multidisciplinary and integrative manner, and illuminates consequences of alternative forms of governance for professionals and organisations.
Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP)
The Leiden Leadership Programme (LLP) is a one-year extracurricular honours programme for master's students of Leiden University, TU Delft and Erasmus University Rotterdam who want to develop their professional and personal skills.
Education for Professionals
Our section offers education for professionals and executive education, including on-demand, customized or in-company, on topics related to citizen-state interaction, decision-making, inclusion and psychological safety, public leadership and change management.
