PhD regulations and guidelines
Guidelines, rules and other important information for PhD candidates are described in detail in various documents. In addition, FGGA has developed faculty-specific guidelines and best practices, which are collected on this page as well.
PhD track
- PhD Guidelines: Information on facilities for PhD candidates and the arrangements for training, supervision and labour market preparation.
- PhD Regulations: Rules for appointing (co-)supervisors, the Doctorate Committee and the Examining Committee, and the requirements to be met by a dissertation.
- Golden Rules for PhD Supervision: A list of best practices for both the PhD candidate and the supervisors. These ‘rules of conduct’ emphasise the shared responsibility of the supervisor and the PhD candidate. They also clarify what expectations they both may have. See also the Golden Rules in short.
PhD defence ceremony
- Instructions for lay talk: Tips and instructions for giving the lay talk.
- PhD Defence Protocol: All the conditions relating to the PhD defence ceremony.
- Practical matters: Information on the procedure during the PhD defence ceremony.
FGGA Regulations and Guidelines
- Go/No-go Guidelines
- Guidelines on obtaining a doctorate on the basis of articles FGGA: Obtaining a PhD based on a series of articles is becoming increasingly common. The Faculty of Governance & Global Affairs (FGGA) of Leiden University provides guidance for this format. These guidelines provide direction but do not impose strict formal requirements for article-based dissertations, thereby allowing room for different approaches across the various disciplines within the faculty. The aim of this document is twofold: a) to foster a degree of uniformity in dissertations across the faculty and b) to provide clarity and predictability for PhD candidates and their supervisors.
