The Leiden Centre of Continental Philosophy is pleased to announce a lecture by Sophie Loidolt, Professor of philosophy and the chair of practical philosophy at TU Darmstadt.
Abstract
One of Being and Time’s most famous and infamous passages concern the public realm (die Öffentlichkeit): Heidegger’s diagnosis that “by publicness everything gets obscured” (SZ 127) has provoked numerous interpretations, regarding the existential, sociological, and political meanings of the term “publicness”(Öffentlichkeit). In this talk, I offer an interpretation that relates these different aspects, embeds them in Heidegger’s view of phenomenology and modernity, and connects them to his involvement in National Socialism as well as his reluctant post-war attitude regarding the public sphere.
About
Sophie Loidolt is Professor of philosophy and holds the chair of practical philosophy at TU Darmstadt. Her work centers on issues in the fields of phenomenology, political and legal philosophy, and ethics, as well as transcendental philosophy and philosophy of mind. Her latest book is Phenomenology of Plurality: Hannah Arendt on Political Intersubjectivity (Routledge, 2018).
