Who are you and what is your position in the organisation for Leiden2022?

I am professor by special appointment of the History of Urban Culture, in particular of Leiden. In that capacity I am involved in research into and teaching about the rich history of Leiden. My focus is on diversity. In addition to teaching and research, I am committed to connecting Leiden museums, heritage institutions and historical associations with the university. My participation in the core team FGW-Leiden fits in nicely with that.

Humanities scholar can deepen current debates. Exchange is crucial in this regard. The Faculty of Humanities will enter the city in 2022. By collaborating with the city and residents, by informing and inspiring each other, we can broaden our perspective on social issues. Leiden2022 offers a unique opportunity to expand, strengthen and perpetuate ties with residents and the city.

Who are you and what is your position in the organisation for Leiden2022?

I am emeritus professor of Art and Science Interactions at our Faculty of Humanities. I am also chair of the faculty core group that coordinates Leiden City of Science2022. In addition, on behalf of the faculty, I am a member of the scientific advisory board of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), the largest multidisciplinary scientific meeting in Europe, which will take place from 11 to 15 July 2022 in Leiden.

What can people according to you expect from the Faculty of Humanities around Leiden2022?

Humanities can and should feature prominently academic and societal debates about the great challenges of our time. The humanities must be at the heart of society, in an active and open exchange with society. This attitude is clearly present in the faculty projects that will be carried out in Leiden2022. For me, the social urgency and relevance of the humanities is the starting point actively contribute from within our faculty to Leiden2022.

Who are you and what is your position in the organisation for Leiden2022?

My name is Kitty Zijlmans and I have worked for a long time in the art history program at this faculty and from 2000-2021 I held the chair 'Art History 1800-present/World Art Studies'. The latter expresses the desire to broaden art history from a Eurocentric to a global perspective. I am a member of the core group that supervises the Leiden ECS2022 process for the Faculty of Humanities. As chairman of the City Curatorium Visual Arts in the Public Space of the Lucas van Leyden fund of the Municipality of Leiden, I also have a connecting role between the faculty and the city.

What can people according to you expect from the Faculty of Humanities around Leiden2022?

I hope that we as a faculty can portray the importance of humanities thinking and cting in an organic but also structural way, the enormous diversity of perspectives and approaches that relate to the (worldwide study of) art, culture, language, history, religion, philosophy, the creative and performing arts; that whole palette that makes us human. Achieving this by establishing connections between staff, students, residents and visitors of Leiden. The city is the canvas on which a multitude of imaginations can be created. The humanities are the interpreters and inquirers of context, cultur and meaning, as was recently argued in the NRC (26/27 June 2021). Our faculty houses an enormously broad and multi-coloured palette of knowledge and expertise that reaches down to the capillaries of society. With ECS 2022, this should become more and more permanent manifest in the city.

Who are you and what is your position in the organisation for Leiden2022?

I am a research policy officer at the Faculty of Humanities. Among other things, I am concerned with the social impact of our research. In other words: how do we as a faculty encourage, facilitate and value researchers who actively try to increase and demonstrate the positive impact of their research on society? In this role I am part of the core group FGW-Leiden2022.;

What can people according to you expect from the Faculty of Humanities around Leiden2022?

During Leiden City of Science 2022, the faculty in all its diversity will interact with Leiden citizens. Through various projects and initiatives, our employees, sometimes digitally, often physically, go into the city to seek contact with the resident of Leiden. Interaction is key in addition to explaining what we as humanities scientists do and why it is important. We in return, will also learn a lot from listing to Leiden citizens. In this way, future research can aline even better with questions that arise in the city and the contact between the city of Leiden and our faculty will be strengthened, even after 2022.

I am advisor online communication and editor-in-chief of the faculty of humanities. We try to bring Leiden humanities into the limelight. What research is being done here? Which courses do we offer? What contributions do the humanities make to society? We tell the stories, for example through our websites, the newsletter, events and our posts, blogs and podcasts. And of course through our film 'We are Humanities'. Leiden2022 offers us a great stage in that respect. In the core group, realizing that visibility in collaboration with the partners is my main focus.
