If you decide to join this Student for a Day event, you:

• attend the lecture 'Collective Violence and Policing Public Disorder' of the course 'Introduction to Violence and Policing'
  by Prof.dr. Don Weenink;
• meet the student ambassador Job Van de Waeter;
• will have the possibility to ask all your questions about Crisis and Security Management, specialisation Violence, Interventions, and Policing.

08.40 hrs.	Start your Student for a Day at Wijnhaven. The reception will scan your personal QR code
09.15 - 12.00 hrs.	Attend the lecture 'Collective Violence and Policing Public Disorder'
	You can ask questions during the break or after the lecture

About this lecture

The content that will be discussed in this lecture: In the large majority of protests across the globe, relationships between police and
protesters remain peaceful. However, in some cases, hostility and violence emerge.
Though relatively infrequent, this form of violence tends to have large social and political ramifications. Feelings of insecurity among both protestors and police may increase, and politicians may use the violent event to raise fear in the population. In some cases, politicians exploit these events to further repressive and undemocratic political agendas.
In this lecture, we discuss how and why protests turn violent, considering the roles that police, protestors and politicians play in the process
