Research and teaching experience
Since a few years, my research focus has been contemporary Brazilian Film. After having lectured and researched contemporary Portuguese and Brazilian Literature at the University of Utrecht, the switch to film was a ‘natural’ one due to my own interest in this field. I am particularly interested in the films that have been produced from the 1990s onward, which characterize the so-called rebirth (retomada) of Brazilian cinema. Since these films portray complex aspects of contemporary Brazilian society, I try to highlight the particular position women have in this society and what role they play in its (re)construction and complex dynamics.
Gender studies have also always interested me. In my PhD, I approached the identity of female characters in two novels of the Portuguese contemporary writer Lídia Jorge within the Portuguese postcolonial and post-revolutionary context. Since I myself have intensively lived the Portuguese carnation revolution of 1974, social movements and in particular the role played by women in these movements has always deeply interested me.
Currently I am the tutor coordinator of the BAIS. I am responsible for and work closely together with a young, very dynamic, and highly professional team of instructors. Programmatic and didactic aspects of the tutorials structure are some of the issues I am dealing with. I am also a member of the Board of Examinations.
Since teaching is one of my great passions, I am very happy to be able to lecture in the tutorials of the Program, such as in Introduction to Area Studies, subjects in the area of Latin America, and Practising International Studies.
When you have the responsibility for the tutorial system in a vast and differentiated program as International Studies, there is not so much time left for hobbies. Therefore, I spend the little free time I have meeting with friends and family, doing sports, and continuing my research.
