De beste wijze om iets te leren is er les in te geven (Seneca). In mijn werk als hoogleraar, verbonden aan het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, kom ik dagelijks in aanraking met mensen die mij inspireren. Enthousiaste studenten die me van tijd tot tijd verrassen met hun creativiteit, moedige patiënten en andere bezoekers uit alle windstreken die hier een deel van hun gedachtengoed achterlaten. Ik verkeer dagelijks in het gezelschap van mensen die mij iets leren. Voor mij is de Leidse universiteit een plaats waar ik mij zowel professioneel als persoonlijk maximaal kan ontplooien en daarbij iets van mijn kennis en kunde kan overdragen aan de volgende generatie. Op 4 september 1992 sprak hij zijn oratie uit, getiteld "De heelkunde, in versnelling of op de rem?".
