"The best way to learn is to teach" (Seneca). As a Professor of Surgery at Leiden University Medical Centre I get in touch with many inspiring people. Enthusiastic students who surprise me with their creativity, courageous patients, and visitors from all parts of the world who give me food for thought. I feel privileged to enjoy the company of people who teach me. This is the place to grow, professionally as well as an individual, providing me with the opportunity to transmit some of my experience to the next generation. The titel of his inaugurational lecture was 'De heelkunde, in versnelling of op de rem?'.
