Jan Jansen is universitair docent aan het Instituut voor Culturele Antropologie en Ontwikkelingssociologie van de Universiteit Leiden. Hij studeerde Culturele Antropologie en Geschiedenis (specialisatie Middeleeuwen). In 1995 is hij gepromoveerd aan de Universiteit Leiden op een etnografische studie van het West-Afrikaanse Sunjata-epos. Zijn onderzoek naar orale traditie brengt hem zowel naar de geschiedenis van pre-koloniaal Afrika als naar politieke debatten in de hedendaagse media. Sinds 2010 is hij hoofdredacteur van het tijdschrift "History in Africa - A Journal of Debates, Methods, and Source Analysis".
