Harm Habing is voor velen ‘het gezicht’ van de Nederlandse infraroodsterrenkunde, en in bijzonder het ruimteonderzoek dat te maken heeft met het koele heelal. Hij was jarenlang betrokken bij de voorbereidingen van de tweede Nederlandse satelliet: IRAS, de eerste infraroodsatelliet die een complete kaart van de infraroodhemel maakte.

Harm Habing begon als scheikundige bij de Universiteit van Groningen, maar maakte al snel de overstap naar Natuurkunde en uiteindelijk Sterrenkunde.
Habing was de principal investigator van het IRAS project. IRAS, een infraroodsatelliet, was de eerste satelliet die een volledige kaart maakte van de infraroodhemel. IRAS was de grootste satelliet in Europa die tot dan toe gebouwd was en werd op 26 januari 1963 gelanceerd. In de tien maanden dat IRAS actief was werd er ook naast deze overzichtskaart aanwezigheid van stofschijven rond bepaalde sterren, nieuwe objecten die alleen in het infrarood zicht baar zijn, nieuwe sterrenstelsels, kometen en planetoïden ontdekt.
