Broekema is Researcher and Lecturer at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, Leiden University. Among other research projects Broekema participated in the NWO VIDI-project “Double Bind” (coordinated by dr. Trui Steen), the WODC study for the National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism into the role of external experts in crisis decision making (coordinated by prof. dr. René Torenvlied), and the international COST Action on Local Public Sector Reform (coordinated by prof dr. Sabine Kuhlmann).
Broekema taught courses in Social Research Methods, Policy Analysis, Public Management, and Crisis Management (2011-2015), and participated in the Program Committee as an academic staff member (2014-2015).
In terms of education, Broekema holds a master's degree (2011, with honors) in Public Administration from Leiden University, with a specialization in Crisis and Security Management.
