Since February 2020 Wim van den Doel is Dean of the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus (LDE) Universities, a strategic alliance of Leiden University, TU Delft, and Erasmus University Rotterdam and professor at the three connected universities.
Education
MA (1987) and PhD (1994), both at Leiden University.
Research
He received his PhD at Leiden University in 1994 and published mainly on the history of the Dutch East Indies. Among his books are: De Stille Macht. Het Europese binnenlands bestuur op Java en Madoera 1808-1942 (Amsterdam: Bert Bakker, 1994), Afscheid van Indië. De val van het Nederlandse imperium in Azië (Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Prometheus, 2000), Zo ver de wereld strekt (Amsterdam: Bert Bakker, 2011) and Snouck. Het volkomen geleerdenleven van Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (Amsterdam: Prometheus, 2021)
Professional Service
From 2007 to 2017 he was Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University and from 2017 tot 2020 he was member of the Executive Board of the Dutch Research Council, chair of the domain Social Sciences and Humanities and responsible for the National Research Agenda.
