Clinical Epidemiology

Research into understanding of disease starts with comparing large groups of individuals and observing average differences. Epidemiological methods allow to some extent establishing that such differences are causal. Only when a large amount of knowledge is present, determined at group level, is it possible to quantify an individual’s risk of disease. Currently this situation is gradually transpiring. We think less in terms of ‘what is the cause of a disease’ but more in ‘what are the causes of the disease for this patient at this moment in time’. This knowledge leads to determination of individual risk profiles, which provides new options for prevention or treatment of disease. This principle can be applied to every disease.

Suzanne Cannegieter applies this principle mostly to the disease venous thrombosis. Hence, her group studies causes of thrombosis, as well as individual risk profiles. With this knowledge, thrombosis can be optimally prevented and treated.

This research contributes to NWA questions about health care research, prevention and treatment.

Academic career

Suzanne Cannegieter studied medicine at the Universities of Groningen and Leiden. She obtained a PhD degree in 1996 at the Leiden University with as title: “Optimal oral anticoagulant therapy in patients with mechanical heart valves’”. In 1999 she obtained an MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. During this period she also was a visiting lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Department of Haematology of the Charing Cross and Westminster Hospital. In 2003 she was appointed as clinical epidemiologist at the LUMC at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and since 2016 also at the Department of Internal Medicine, section of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. In 2016 she was appointed professor of Clinical Epidemiology in particular Thrombosis and Haemostasis. The title of her inaugural lecture is "Models of Numbers and Blood”. Since 2017 she is visiting professor at the Universidade de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brasil.

Prof. Cannegieter is a member of the Education Committee of the Council of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and co-chair of the ISTH Scientific Subcommittee on Predictive and Diagnostic Variables. She was board member of the Netherlands Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (NVTH) and was a member of the Local Organizing Committee (Education) for the 24th Congress of ISTH, held in Amsterdam 2013. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dutch Thrombosis Foundation and  member of the Science Committee Medisch Centrum Haaglanden. She is Associate Editor for ‘Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis’ and member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and PLoS Medicine.  In2010 she received the LUMC Marie Parijs award for her studies into venous thrombosis.
