Fields of interest

As a Caribbeanist I am particularly fascinated by processes of continuity and change shown by postcolonial multi-ethnic societies. My focus is on the Dutch Caribbean, primarily on the political and cultural history of Suriname following World War II. Through the ages this country has experienced a series of remarkable stages and dramatic episodes, evolving from an exploitation colony from the 17th century onwards to become a semi-autonomous colony in 1954 and an independent republic in 1975. These developments have left a complex legacy, bearing distinct political, socio-economic and cultural features which have had a profound effect on Suriname’s post-independence history. It is my belief that a successful examination of Suriname’s 20th century history requires extensive archival research, oral history and literature study, and is most rewarding when it centres on the role of nationalism, class, ethnicity, political culture and regional/global integration. In-depth knowledge of Suriname’s major dynamics and transformations can be obtained best when holding to a Surinamese perspective and using a Caribbean context.
