Professor Margreet Kloppenburg is heading the Osteoarthritis Research Group of the Rheumatology Department of the LUMC. Professor Kloppenburg is appointed at the department of Rheumatology, where she works as a rheumatologist and at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology, both from the LUMC, since 2000. She is Educator of Rheumatology since 2017. From 2011 to 2016 she served a member of the Medical Ethical Committee of the LUMC. Professor Kloppenburg was a member of the Annual Meeting Planning Committee of the European League Against Rheumatism from 2014 to 2017 and from the Editorial Board of Arthritis and Rheumatology from 2010 to 2015. She is a member of the Advisory board of Nature Reviews Rheumatology. In 2017 she was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the OsteoArthritis Research Society International.

Osteoarthritis
She started research in the field of Osteoarthritis in the department of Rheumatology and made it one of its key research areas. The work of her group focusses on the causal role of systemic factors in osteoarthritis and on methodology to evaluate the course of osteoarthritis by MRI and radiographs, with special attention for hand osteoarthritis. She is the “principal investigator” of the GARP study (Genetica, ARtrose en Progressie) and the HOSTAS study (Hand OSTeoArthritis in Secondary care).
Professor Kloppenburg has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in the national and international literature.
Academic career
After she graduated at the Medical School of the University of Groningen in 1991 (cum laude), professor Kloppenburg obtained her PhD-degree on the thesis "The tetracycline derivative minocycline as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis" at the University of Leiden in 1996. She was trained as a rheumatologist in the Leiden University Medical Center and qualified in 2000.
In 2014 she registered as an epidemiologist.
Since 2012 she is appointed Full Professor of Rheumatology at the LUMC with special interest for “Aetiology and Clinimetrics of Osteoarthritis”.
