Jeroen C.J. Eikenboom is professor of Internal Medicine, especially Hemostasis and Thrombosis. He is board certified internist vascular medicine and hematologist. He is working at the department of Internal Medicine and is head of the division of Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

Bleeding disorders

Blood should remain fluid when blood vessels are intact to secure the circulation. However, upon vascular damage blood should quickly clot to prevent blood loss. This delicate balance is called the thrombo-haemorrhagic balance. Disorders of this balance may lead to excessive bleeding or increased risk of thrombosis. Through clinical and fundamental research of haemostatic disorders Eikenboom tries to gain insight in the pathophysiology of bleeding disorders. Bleeding risk is a multidisciplinary problem that involves several disciplines like internal medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, and surgery. Collaborative efforts among these specialties is of great importance for scientific research as well as clinical care of bleeding disorders.

The research of Eikenboom focuses mainly on the molecular genetics of von Willebrand disease, the genotype-phenotype associations in von Willebrand disease, and the biochemical and cell biological aspects of synthesis, storage, secretion, and clearance of von Willebrand factor. In addition to these pathophysiological studies he is also working on the development of new, innovative treatment strategies (e.g. RNA interference) for von Willebrand disease and thrombosis.

Academic career

Jeroen Eikenboom received his MD degree in 1988 at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. He obtained his PhD at the Leiden University and defended his thesis, entitled "The inheritance of von Willebrand disease", on November 23, 1994. He was trained in internal medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center and registered as internist in 2001. Since then he sub-specialized in hematology and vascular medicine. In 2008-2009 he was visiting scientist at the Life Sciences Institute of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. He was appointed full professor of Internal Medicine, especially Hemostasis and Thrombosis in 2011. March 9, 2012 he held his inaugural speech, entitled “The hemostasis integral”.

Jeroen Eikenboom has been (co)chairman of the Scientific Subcommittee on von Willebrand factor of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) from 1999-2013. He is associate editor of journal HemaSphere. He is chair of the board of the Dutch Society of Hemophilia Treaters (NVHB). Furthermore, he is chair of the scientific advisory board of the Landsteiner Foundation for Blood Transfusion Research (LSBR).
