Herman Paul is Professor of the History of the Humanities at Leiden University. From 1 September 2019 onwards, he will be directing a NWO-funded (Vici) project entitled “Scholarly Vices: A Longue Durée History.”

Herman Paul is Professor of the History of the Humanities at Leiden University. From 1 September 2019 onwards, he will be directing a NWO-funded (Vici) project entitled “Scholarly Vices: A Longue Durée History.”

Previous and still ongoing projects include “The Scholarly Self: Character, Habit, and Virtue in the Humanities, 1860-1930” (funded by NWO), “The Demands of Our Time: Epochal Thinking from 1800 to the Present” (funded by KNAW), and “Follow the Money: Does Competitive Research Funding Contribute to Questionable Research Practices?” (funded by ZonMw).

Paul is the author of “Key Issues in Historical Theory” (2015) and “Hayden White: The Historical Imagination” (2011). He is editor of the “Journal of the Philosophy of History” and associate editor of “History of Humanities.”

He is currently at work on a book-length study of virtues and vices in nineteenth-century German historiography and editing a volume entitled “Writing the History of the Humanities.”

Paul obtained his PhD (2006) from the University of Groningen, where he also held a postdoc position (2006-2011) and still holds a special chair in secularization studies (2012-2020). Visiting fellowships took him to Princeton (2006-2007), Leuven (2008), Mainz (2009), and Berlin (2016). From 2013 to 2018, he was a member of The Young Academy (KNAW).
