My research focuses on network science, in particular the development of algorithms and methods for analyzing large-scale real-world (social) network data. The aim is to use these algorithms to advance our understanding of complex, dynamic systems across a wide range of domains, including (computational) social science, financial systems and economics, critical infrastructure networks, and science studies. I am head of the Leiden Network Science research group, academic co-director of the Dutch PLANET-NL platform for population-scale social network analysis, co-organizer of the Leiden Complex Networks Network (LCN2) and board member (former chair) of the Dutch Network Science Society, an official chapter of the International Network Science Society. Since 2022, I am director of education and member of the management team of LIACS, in particular responsible for the bachelor programmes. I am programme director of the Leiden bachelor Informatica (Computer Science) since 2022 and was so for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence until 2025. I teach courses on competitive programming and Social Network Analysis, and involved in the minor Network Science for a Connected World.
