Research

Evelyn Bosma investigates the relationship between bilingualism and cognition, mainly among Frisian-Dutch bilingual children. For her research, she uses eye-tracking and EEG, among other techniques. She has written articles on cognate facilitation, code-switching and the cognitive effects of bilingualism.

Teaching activities

She teaches several courses within Latin American Studies and supervises intern and thesis students, both at BA and MA level.

Curriculum vitae

Evelyn Bosma (Rotterdam, 1989) studied Linguistics and Latin American Studies at Leiden University. In 2017, she defended her PhD thesis (Fryske Akademy/UvA) on the linguistic and cognitive development of Frisian-Dutch bilingual children. After that, she worked as a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University and Utrecht University.

Awards

In 2021, Evelyn Bosma received the Keetje Hodshon Prize and was runner-up of the Gratama Science Prize. In 2020, she won the Klokhuis Science Prize, together with her former MA student Naomi Nota, with an eye-tracking study on the effect of cognates on Frisian-Dutch bilingual children’s reading. In 2018, she was nominated for the AVT/Anéla Dissertation Prize and in 2017, she won the Science Prize from the RUG/Campus Fryslân and the Best Poster Award at the TABU-dag.

Popularization

She wrote articles for Onze Taal and Sprachspiegel, and blogged about her work on the websites of Science Palooza, De AyO-tún, Leiden Language Blog and Meertalig.nl. Furthermore, she did interviews with the local radio and several newspapers, including Omrop Fryslân, Leeuwarder Courant, Leidsch Dagblad and Kennislink.
