Rob Verpoorte receives prestigious pharmocognosy award

The American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) has given the Varro E. Tyler prize to Rob Verpoorte, for his outstanding lifetime contributions to the science of nature as source of medicine.

Verpoorte is professor emeritus of pharmacognosy and plant cell biotechnology at the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL). Since 1970, he has investigated various aspects of natural products, especially for biologically active plant substances and their biosynthesis

Stimulating and supporting

‘Foremost, I want to thank everyone who has supported us in the past years and have done all of the experimental effort. This award is the result of teamwork,’ he states matter-of-factly. ‘It was my responsibility direct the research and to stimulate and support the many people working in the labs. I haven’t done any laboratory work since 1980.’

Award ceremony

During the ASP meeting in June, 2023, Verpoorte will get presented the prize in Rockville, United States.
