Marcellus Ubbink receives grant for research into evolution of enzymes

The Dutch organisation for scientific research NWO has announced that it will award an ENW-Klein grant to Marcellus Ubbink (LIC) for his research into the role of temperature in the evolution of enzymes. Sixteen grants have been awarded in total.

Enzymes are molecules that regulate or increase almost all chemical reactions in living creatures. And just like all living things, enzymes are shaped by evolution. Ubbink plans to use the grant to study what role temperature plays in the evolution of new enzymatic functions.

Ubbink will recreate evolution in the lab for an enzyme that is responsible for antibiotic resistance in tuberculosis bacteria to learn more about the origins of antibiotic resistance.
