Leiden Centre for Sustainability Governance
Topics
In our research and education, we focus on the following topics:
1. Policy, politics, and uncertainty
We address the challenges of developing effective sustainability policies in complex, uncertain contexts. This requires not only changing the content of policies but also renewing our thinking about policy processes.
2. Environmental governance
We examine governance approaches that promote environmental sustainability at various scales and across different sectors. We focus on place-based challenges, analyzing phenomena at the street level, in neighborhoods, or at farmyards, where all environmental challenges converge.
3. Justice and systemic change
We explore how governance systems can ensure fairness and equity in sustainability transitions. This requires inclusive decision-making processes and procedural justice to navigate trade-offs between competing public values
4. Institutionalizing sustainable well-being
We address multi-level governance and the challenge of upscaling sustainability initiatives. This involves rethinking how society functions and building collective identity within the field to make integrated sustainability frameworks more effective.
5. Sustainable governance of innovation and technology
We study how technological developments, such as AI, can be governed within sustainable transitions. While technology can enable change, it may also serve as an excuse for inaction under the assumption that "technology will fix it."
