Event description
The Inaugural Lecture of the Grotius Centre LLM Programmes 2026–2027 also marks the launch of the ESIL Interest Group on Reparations in International Law. The event will examine the International Law Commission’s recent work on Compensation for the Damage Caused by Internationally Wrongful Acts, and consider how this initiative might contribute to greater coherence across the law of reparations.
Mārtiņš Paparinskis, the ILC’s Special Rapporteur on the topic, will deliver the keynote address, followed by an expert panel discussion with Eric De Brabandere, Lucy Reed and Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh. Drawing on developments in the practice of international courts and tribunals, investor-State dispute settlement, international claims commissions and climate litigation, the speakers will explore how compensation is conceptualised and awarded, as well as the recurring challenges involved in identifying, assessing and valuing damage.
