Research in Physics, Quantum Matter and Optics (MSc)

Why Leiden University?

The Physics and Quantum Matter and Optics specialisation is one of the two programmes Leiden offers in experimental physics. The programme can be tailored to individual needs and interests.

Experimental Physics in Quantum Matter and Optics

Experimental physics research in the domain and Quantum Matter and Optics offers comprehensive coverage of major current research themes, such as scanning probe techniques based on atomic force and scanning tunnelling microscopy, molecular electronics, oxide electronics, superconductivity, quantum information, plasmonics and nanomechanics. This specialisation offers its own set of courses that is dedicated yet flexible enough to modify where needed.

Education at a world class research institute

The Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) is one of the oldest physics institutes in the Netherlands. Renowned physicist like Lorentz, Kamerlingh-Onnes, Zeeman and van der Waals obtained their breakthrough results while working in Leiden. For over a century, many eminent scientists have been and are associated to LION as staff members, alumni and guests.  Building on this tradition, we perform physics research and provide physics education at the highest level. Therefore you can expect excellent education and cutting edge research in Physics during your master’s programme.

Access to top research facilities

The Leiden Institute of Physics has access to a number of key facilities which enables our research groups and therefor students to do their innovatory research. Leiden Physicists  have access to facilities such as scanning probes and electron microscopes for atomic-scale imaging, low temperature setups (including one with a base temperature of 10 mK), a 3D printer at nanometer scale, a cleanroom, and numerous lasers, optical components, and (single-photon) optical detectors.
