The Applied Mathematics specialisation is the excellent preparation to start a career in research. It is a suitable stepping stone for pursuing a PhD degree. The degree also provides job opportunities outside academia in a (international) industrial environment.
Acquired skills and competence
After graduation you will have excellent knowledge of theoretical Mathematics and experience with working in a multinational environment. This ensures you are capable of operating successfully on the international market. If you have the ambition to deepen you knowledge this degree is the right preparation to apply for a PhD programme.
Career
Many of our alumni continue into PhD programmes—often at the Leiden Mathematical Institute. Others move into research and innovation in industry, with employers such as AkzoNobel, Shell, Philips and TNO. Beyond academia and industry, mathematicians are also in high demand in finance, insurance, IT, communications, logistics, and many other fields.
