Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges (BA/BSc) - Leiden University College

What is Liberal Arts and Sciences?

Perhaps you are completely new to the concept of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or perhaps you are familiar with the Liberal Arts colleges of the United States. So, what actually is Liberal Arts & Sciences, and why has it become so popular in the Netherlands in recent years?

What if you could study the energy transition as a question of geosciences, economics, and political power all at once, instead of being asked to choose one? What if you did not have to choose your major on day one, but could test a few subjects before committing? What if the next three years were less about picking a subject and more about learning to ask better questions of any of them? LUC's Liberal Arts and Sciences education can help you answer these questions.

The Liberal Arts and Sciences approach to education is based on the idea that the world is far too complex and interconnected to be understood through a single discipline. At LUC, you explore the sciences, social sciences, and humanities through an interdisciplinary lens, gaining both broad knowledge and deeper expertise in an area of your choice. Along the way, you develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, and learn how to work both independently and collaboratively.

Life at LUC extends well beyond the classroom. Students have the choice to either live together in our residence in the centre of The Hague, or to live off campus. Building a life with your peers in an international, close-knit community encourages you to exchange perspectives, take initiative, and grow as a responsible global citizen. From joining student-run clubs and volunteer initiatives around The Hague to shaping campus life through leading councils, boards, and committees, the opportunities to learn, lead, and collaborate are endless.

Ultimately, a Liberal Arts and Sciences education at LUC cultivates intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility, and the passion for lifelong learning. It empowers you to respond creatively to the challenges of a rapidly changing world and to pursue your chosen path with confidence.
