Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges (BA/BSc) - Leiden University College

Admission requirements

For admission to LUC's Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges programme you need to meet certain requirements.

The Admissions Committee holistically reviews your application to determine whether you are a good fit for the programme, taking into account all components and not focusing on one in particular. An important part of the assessment is your academic record to determine how well you are doing academically. Please view the diploma and English proficiency requirements below. To view the other assessment components please check the mathematics skills section and visit the 'Application and selection' page.

Diploma requirements

Because LUC The Hague is an honours programme of Leiden University a selection process is in place. Please view the minimum admission requirements of Leiden University as well as the additional selection requirements for LUC on this diploma list.

If you meet the admission requirements of Leiden University, but not the additional selection requirements stated for LUC, you can still submit an application for our programme. Please note that in this case you have a lower chance to be selected. The only way to assess a diploma that is not on the list is to submit an application in the application portal.

English proficiency requirements

LUC offers a fully English taught programme and all applicants need to be proficient in English. Indicate your English proficiency level on the LUC form (see required documents). That is sufficient in order to submit your application. There are two ways to prove your English proficiency:

  1. Obtain one of the accepted English proficiency tests with the required scores.
Tests cannot be older than two years by the time the programme starts and results must be obtained in one single test. This means that your test date cannot be older than September 2025 if you wish to start in August 2027.
  2. Obtain a diploma (with or without a grade requirement) that is considered sufficient proof. View the diploma list and look for: "English language test exemption". If no exemption is not stated for your diploma, you will have to take an English proficiency test for admission.

Mathematics skills

LUC offers a Liberal Arts and Sciences programme and in the first year of the programme, all students must take a statistics course and at least one mathematics related course.

The statistics and mathematics courses in the first year are designed to be accessible for all students from all mathematics levels. The focus is on understanding how statistics and mathematics are embedded in everyday activities and how they relate to real world challenges. Even without a strong mathematical background, you will be able to learn to work with data and to understand the language of mathematics in an accessible way.

On the diploma list a mathematics level and grade advice have been included, but you need to assess yourself which LUC mathematics course matches best with your skills before selecting one for the second semester of your first year. LUC offers the following four mathematics courses: Mathematics for Cryptography, Mathematics for the Life Sciences, Mathematics for Music and Mathematics for Social Networks. You can find more information about each math course under the 'Year 1' section here.

If your mathematics skills are below what is stated on the diploma list, you can still be admitted to LUC. When you need it you can get support through a tutoring center at LUC. If you wish to practise your skills before starting at LUC you can use the free online information and training of the Khan Academy.

All applicants need to submit a transcript with their most recent mathematics grade in addition to the other required documents.
