Japan is an important partner for the Netherlands and Europe in the fields of the economy, technology, security and international cooperation. At the same time, Japan offers valuable insights into issues relating to the changing world order and geopolitics, democracies under pressure, and the economy.

Our interdisciplinary approach enables us to place current developments within a broader historical, cultural and social context. Leiden University has a long tradition in the study of Japan and is one of the world’s leading centres of expertise in this field.

Research focuses, amongst other things, on Japanese politics and foreign relations, the economy and innovation, history, religion, literature, art, the media and popular culture. Attention is also paid to Japan’s role in the Indo-Pacific region and the changing geopolitical dynamics in East Asia. Researchers share their knowledge with governments, businesses, social organisations and the media, and contribute to the public debate on Japan and the wider region. Leiden provides independent expertise that contributes to a better understanding of Japan and its significance for the Netherlands, Europe and the world.
