Young Academy Leiden (YAL) breaks out of disciplinary and institutional boundaries to create a community of early career scholars that is a driving force for fresh ideas within and beyond the university.
Young academics are the future of universities. YAL gives them a voice. We connect young researchers across disciplines and with society. We help young researchers understand and navigate hierarchical university structures. We enable young researchers to shape the future of this university. Our mission centers around three pillars:
We advocate for innovation in those areas. Our members form a diverse group of scholars that pursue interfaculty collaborations and stimulate interdisciplinary research and education within Leiden University. We also critically reflect on science and education policy, in particular those issues that concern early career academics, and take part in public debates. And we want to let the general public learn about science and inspire future generations.
Young Academy Leiden aims to build a network within the university, with other universities and with parties outside the university in Leiden and The Hague.
Tom Louwerse and Helen Pluut respectively act as chair and vice-chair.
