I will join

How can we target only the cells that cause disease—while leaving healthy cells untouched? Can we deliver drugs precisely where they are needed, minimising harmful side effects? And what if we could activate a drug at a specific time and place, reducing long-term toxicity?

Join us for this Tuesday Talk, where Professor Kim Bonger will explain how click reactions—highly selective and efficient chemical processes—can be harnessed for biomedical applications. She will show how these reactions make it possible to control therapeutic activity with extraordinary precision, opening new pathways for safer and more effective treatments.

15.45 hrs Take a seat
16.00 hrs Tuesday Talks: Science Insights
17.00 hrs Drinks

Click chemistry at work

At the Leiden Institute of Chemistry (LIC), Bonger’s lab develops selective chemistry and chemoenzymatic methods that work seamlessly within biological systems. These strategies aim to control therapeutic and cell activity in space and time, paving the way for the next generation of precision medicine. Her group focuses on creating innovative tools at the interface of chemistry and biology: from novel bioorthogonal reactions and molecular probes to advanced strategies for imaging, target discovery, and disease modulation. Together, these efforts seek to unravel and influence the cellular mechanisms behind (auto)immune diseases.

About the speaker

Kim Bonger is Professor of Chemical Biology at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry. Her research centres on bioorthogonal chemistry and chemoenzymatic methods for imaging, target discovery and precision medicine. She also develops molecular probes and new chemical biology approaches to study and modulate immune-related disease processes.
