Adam Lichtenheld is universitair docent Peace Studies, Conflict Resolution en International Relations aan het Institute of Security and Global Affairs. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de dynamiek van gedwongen migratie, gewapende conflicten, politiek geweld, vredesopbouw en post-conflictontwikkeling, met een specifieke focus op Afrika en het Midden-Oosten.

Adam Lichtenheld is universitair docent Peace Studies, Conflict Resolution en International Relations aan het Institute of Security and Global Affairs. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op de dynamiek van gedwongen migratie, gewapende conflicten, politiek geweld, vredesopbouw en post-conflictontwikkeling, met een specifieke focus op Afrika en het Midden-Oosten. Daarnaast werkte hij samen met overheden, internationale donoren en ngo’s aan het ontwerpen en evalueren van humanitaire en ontwikkelingsprogramma’s in een tiental landen.
Adam is auteur van het boek Guilt by Location: Forced Displacement and Population Sorting in Civil Wars (Cambridge University Press), winnaar van de Conflict Research Society Book of the Year Prize 2025. Zijn werk verscheen onder meer in International Organization, Political Geography, British Journal of Political Science en Economics & Politics, evenals in publicaties zoals The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Just Security, The New Humanitarian en The Conversation. Hij ontving onderzoekssubsidies van onder andere de National Science Foundation, het U.S. Institute of Peace, Innovations for Poverty Action, het King Center on Global Development, de Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation en het University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.
Voordat hij aan de Leiden University verbonden werd, was Adam Executive Director van het Immigration Policy Lab aan Stanford University, Senior Researcher Peace & Conflict bij de humanitaire ngo Mercy Corps en postdoctoraal fellow en docent aan Yale University. Daarnaast werkte hij als consultant voor UNHCR, de Wereldbank, de Danish Refugee Council, Refugees International en USAID. Hij behaalde zowel zijn PhD als MA in politicologie aan de University of California, Berkeley.
Adam verzorgt onderwijs over gedwongen migratie, conflict, vredesopbouw en onderzoeksmethoden.
