Luca Bruls is een antropoloog die onderzoek doet in de Sahel. Ze heeft veldwerk gedaan in Tsjaad, Senegal en Mali. Haar werk focust op Islam en gender, met aandacht voor soefistische moslim netwerken onder vrouwen en Fulani. Ze houdt zich bezig met telefonie, sociale media gebruik, en digitalisering in de regio. Ze richt zich ook op vraagstukken omtrent geweld, onzekerheid, en onveiligheid in de genoemde gebieden en hoe deze van invloed zijn op het alledaagse leven (in met name Tsjaad).
