Pieter Slaman is Leiden University's university historian, with support of the A.E. Cohen Foundation. He is also a specialist in the history of education. His book ‘De glazen Toren. De Leidse Universiteit 1970-2020’ covered the institutional and cultural developments at Leiden university since the 1970’s.

Pieter Slaman is Leiden University's university historian, with support of the A.E. Cohen Foundation. He is also a specialist in the history of education. His book ‘De glazen Toren. De Leidse Universiteit 1970-2020’ covered the institutional and cultural developments at Leiden university since the 1970’s.

Previously, he wrote on past and present policies of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science at the occasion of its centennial in 2018. Earlier, he conducted research on the political history of Dutch public student grants and support between 1815 and 2015. His most noteworthy publications are ‘In de regel vrij. 100 jaar politiek rond onderwijs, cultuur en wetenschap’ (2018), ‘Kansen in het Koninkrijk. Studiebeurzen 1815-2015’ (2016) and ‘Staat van de student. Tweehonderd jaar politieke geschiedenis van studiefinanciering in Nederland’ (2015).

Since 2015, Slaman was supervisor and lecturer at the Leiden University Dual PhD Centre, where he helped and taught PhD candidates who combine their professional occupation with scientific research. With prof. Willem Otterspeer, he supervised Kees van Gageldonk who obtained his PhD degree on a thesis on the development of independent research tasks at Dutch universities of applied science, and Anneke Boot who wrote a thesis on the history of vocational education in Leiden. With prof. Wim Willems, he supervised Saskia Gras who obtained her degree on a thesis on the history of the ‘Vrije Academie’, a former art academy in The Hague. And with prof. Frans de Ruiter, he supervised Rina Visser obtaining her PhD degree on participative art projects.

Slaman taught courses on Dutch political history, on research design and on the writing of theses. He was coordinator and lecturer of the minor ‘Innovation, Co-Creation and Global Impact’ in 2018-2019. He obtained a University Teaching Qualification (BKO).

Slaman was a member of the board of the Royal Netherlands Historical Society (KNHG), 2017-2019 and a founding member of Jong KNHG, the youth branch of KNHG.
