New: The Academic Pride Podcast
Could you truly be yourself at Leiden University over the past 450 years? That question is at the heart of the first episode of ‘The Academic Pride Podcast’, available now.
The topic ties in with the theme of the university’s Pride boat last year, ‘450 Years of Being Yourself’. The title invites reflection, because: is it really true that you could always be yourself at Leiden University? That question formed the basis for the topic of this podcast [this year, Leiden University didn't participate in the Canal Parade, but in the Pride Walk, ed.].
Presenter Camilla Kwende, student assistant at the Expertise Office Diversity and Inclusion, speaks with Dr. Looi van Kessel, assistant professor of Literary Studies and Gender Studies and former chair of the LGBTQ+ network, and Dr. Pieter Slaman, university historian and theme lead for academic freedom at Leiden University. The central question is whether, throughout Leiden University’s 450-year history, there has been room to be yourself. Together they look back on the history of Leiden and the university from an academic perspective. Spanning the 18th and 19th centuries through to the rise of emancipation movements in the 20th, the conversation moves across different periods and arrives at a question that remains relevant today: how do academic freedom and a safe, inclusive university relate to one another?
