More information about Nina van Capelleveen

Dr. Nina van Capelleveen has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Child Law and Health Law since 1 August 2024. In January 2025, she defended her PhD dissertation entitled ‘Radicalisation of children and government interference. The interaction between areas of law and a children’s and human rights compliant application of legal instruments’. For her doctoral research, she examined various legal grounds for government interference in response to signs of radicalisation among children, from a children’s and human rights perspective. The application of youth justice, child protection, and administrative law in response to radicalisation formed the central focus of her dissertation. In her PhD research, traditional legal research methods and legal-empirical research were combined.

Van Capelleveen conducts research in the fields of youth justice and child protection law, and the intersection of both legal domains. In addition, her research focuses on international children’s and human rights. She teaches in the master's programme in Child Law, including courses such as youth justice, privatissimum child law, and as coordinator of the master's thesis. She also teaches in the Advanced LL.M. International Children’s Rights and the Bachelor of Laws programme.

Van Capelleveen obtained her master’s degree in Child Law (cum laude) and completed the Pre-PhD Programme at Leiden University. She worked as a research intern and legal trainee at Jeugdbescherming Regio Amsterdam. In 2019, she was awarded a Meijers PhD position for her PhD research.
