In the mid ‘80s, Orrit discovered that it should be possible to optically detect a single molecule. In 1990 he became the first person to detect the fluorescence signal of 1 molecule. Michel Orrit: '1 genome can be exposed for less than 1000 euro's, thanks to single molecule techniques. This used to cost millions of dollars.'
