Research

Marlisa den Hartog is a cultural historian with a broad interest in the history of mentalities and a specialization in the field of gender and sexuality studies. In 2022 she received her PhD at Leiden University, on the basis of her dissertation Cupid on a Leash: Sexual Codes of Conduct in Renaissance Italy, 1450-1550. In this study, she identified the sexual codes of conduct for people of different genders, ages, social classes and sexual orientations. She also examined how broadly these codes were shared and analyzed the ways in which they were legitimized.

CV

Den Hartog completed a BA in History and a MA in Medieval and Early Modern European History at Leiden University (both cum laude). In 2016 she won the national Volkskrant-IISG award for her Master thesis The pleasure that is taken in bed. Perceptions of sexual desire and sexual identity in Italy, 1450-1500. Prior to and after conducting her PhD research at Leiden University (2017-2022), Den Hartog developed herself as a museum professional. She worked at the Collections and Research Department of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and as a Curator of History in Het Noordbrabants Museum.

Den Hartog is passionate about communicating research to a broader audience. She is one of the founders of the Leiden Medievalists Blog and the Podcast Middeleeuwse Toestanden. She regularly gives public lectures, and has appeared in national and local media. Den Hartog is currently working on a Dutch adaptation of her dissertation which will be published by Atlas Contact.
