Since 2013 Maarten joined the Europa Institute as a PhD-fellow EU law and research staff member.
Maarten Aalbers LLM obtained his degree in law (bachelor) and in EU law (master) at Utrecht University. During his studies he acted as an intern at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2008) and the State Aid Coordination Centre of the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (2009).
Prior to his academic career he worked as the principal legal advisor on state aid for the European Law Centre for Dutch local and regional authorities Europa decentraal. Consulting a broad scope of authorities Maarten acquired a substantive knowledge of the implementation and application of EU-law in the national legal order and EU state aid practice.
After his master thesis on services of a general economic interest (SGEI) and state aid (2010) Maarten continued writing publications concerning the impact of EU law on state intervention aimed at safeguarding public services.
