Prof. Luc Sels is President of the Board of Governors of Leiden University.
Luc Sels is responsible for the university’s overall strategy and leadership, and plays an active role in the continued development of the three campuses in Leiden and The Hague. His priorities will also include the valorisation strategy, consolidating Leiden’s knowledge ecosystem (Key Region Leiden) and expanding the collaboaration with Delft University of Technology and Erasmus Rotterdam in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance (LDE Universities). He is also responsible for internationalisation policy, including the positioning of Leiden University in the European research programmes.
From 2017 to 2025, Luc Sels was rector of KU Leuven. He brings a rich academic background and extensive administrative experience. After obtaining his PhD in social sciences (1995), he became a professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business, where he also served as Dean for nine years. He also had part-time affiliations with the universities of Bern and Rochester. In Flanders, he held various advisory and administrative positions, including at the High Council for Employment and as director of the Work Support Centre.
