Title of PhD research: Collective Human Rights & Climate Change: an Overlooked Approach to Promoting Climate Justice?

While the human rights and climate change discourse has been gaining traction, the notion of collective rights and its possible relationship to climate change has scarcely been analysed. Jolein's research aims to uncover any potential of collective human rights towards promoting climate justice. Specifically, it examines various substantive issues related to climate change from a collective rights lens including disappearing island states and land-related issues such as land degradation and land use. In addition, it provides an analysis of the operationalisation of collective rights. Since the widely acclaimed Urgenda-case, rights-based climate cases have grown exponentially. Still, such cases encounter several procedural barriers, particularly in jurisdictions that do not allow for public interest litigation. The research therefore reviews how collective human rights relate to these barriers and the possible contribution it can make to address climate change in rights-based cases.
